I’ve been asked to fill in for the legendary John Nowacki on WNPR starting tomorrow. Having done morning radio for twenty years, I figured it would be a pretty easy gig to prepare for. I figured wrong.
They might as well have tossed me the keys to the space shuttle.
Lesson One: Breathe
I’m undeterred, however. Despite the requirement that I learn to use at least three new pieces of software, two new studios, and where the bathroom is (I circled the building twice the other day), I’m surprisingly zen-like.
Lesson Two: Dive In!
Change is inevitable – and if you don’t get on board with this, you’re pretty much screwed. The only thing that’s saving me right now is the fact that I’ve been working with digital editing tools in my home studio for almost three years. What I should have been doing back in my days at WPLR was aggressively learning the new studio technologies and automation systems, not just showing up every morning for a series of Norma-Desmond-star-turns.
Don’t make this mistake. No matter what you’re doing now, keep an eye on where things are going. Get in there and start playing around with stuff. Learn Twitter. Subscribe to RSS feeds. And for God’s sake, get to know where the bathroom is.
